Smart water management across 3 400 hectares of citrus farmland
The challenge
A large citrus operation in Limpopo was losing significant water through undetected pipe breaks and inefficient irrigation scheduling. Their existing infrastructure had no real-time monitoring capability, and the farm manager was making decisions based on weekly manual readings. Load-shedding was causing pumps to run dry and destroying motors.
Our solution
Gito deployed a LoRaWAN-based smart metering network across the farm with 47 flow sensors feeding into a centralised IoT dashboard. We integrated automated pump control with load-shedding schedules via the Eskom API and configured threshold alerts via SMS and WhatsApp. A backup communications path via LTE ensured data continuity during power outages.
Outcomes
- —34% reduction in water usage in the first season
- —Zero pump motor failures in 18 months post-deployment
- —Real-time visibility across all 12 irrigation zones from any device
- —Payback period of under 14 months
